Several Area Grapplers Stay Alive In The IHSA State Wrestling Tournament
CHAMPAIGN – Several area wrestlers are still alive on day two of the IHSA State Wrestling Finals in Champaign. EAWR has two left, CM has five and Edwardsville has two.
Class 3A Results
Edwardsville Dylan Gvillo pinned Austin Martin from Dekalb at 5:47 in the match to advance to the quarterfinal wrestlebacks. Gvillo will face Colin Young.
Drew Landau from Edwardsville stayed alive and won 9-2 over Noah Quintana from West Aurora. Landau will face St. Charles East Gavin Connolly in the quarterfinals of the wrestlebacks.
Jorden Johnson from Edwardsville dropped a 7 to 1 match to Collin Carrigan. With that loss Johnson was eliminated from the tournament
Class 2A Results
In the Class 2A 106-pound first round of the wrestle backs Civic Memorial’s Bradley Ruckman had a 14-4 mid-decision over Crystal Lakes Payton Ramsey. Ruckman took command of the match and did not let off the throttle. Ruckman stays alive and beats Antiochs Gavin Hanrahan in the second round of wrestle backs 5 to 3 and advances to the quarter-finals. Ruckman lost in the prelims to Cameron Phillips from Kaneland by a 7-3 decision.
CM’s Joey Biciocci wrestled Joe Loranger from Oak Forest in the first round of the wrestle backs 132 -pound. Biciocci won by tech fall at 5:46 15-0. Biciocci was in command the whole time. Biciocci pinned Freeports Jacob Redington with one second left in the match to advance to the quarterfinal wrestle backs. He will face Glenwoods John Ben Maduena in the semi-final wrestlebacks.Biciocci lost in the prelims to Antiochs Anthony Streib.
Colton Carlisle from Civic Memorial wrestled Steven Marquez from Rock Island and won a 3-0 decision and will wrestle Charlie Heydorn from Lake Forest.
Civic Memorials Ben Skaggs lost in the first round of the wrestle backs to finish his trip to state at 145-pound. He lost to Connor Nelligan from Brother Rice 14 to 4. Skaggs also lost in the prelims to Jayden Colon from Montini by pinfall.
Logan Cooper from CM finished 0-2 in Champaign he lost in the first round of the wrestle backs to Andy Burburijia from Crystle lake 3-2. He also lost in the prelims to Eric Perez 4-3 both losses were close for Cooper.
Class 1A Results
For Roxana Shells Wrestler Braden Johnson he came up short and will be heading home but he came to Champaign and fought hard. In the second round of the wrestlebacks, Jonson was pinned by Coal City Zach Finch at 3:31. Johnson also lost in the prelims to Tremonts Levi Leitner by pinfall at 3:57.
Drake Champlin from East Alton Wood River who surprised everyone in the sectional to advance to the state tournament had a rough two days. In the wrestle backs, Champlin dropped a 10-0 match to Ridgeview Evan Antonio and in the prelims, he dropped an 18-3 tech fall 18-3.
East Alton Wood River still has two wrestlers alive in the wrestle backs. Aaron Niemeyer and Jason Shaw both had pins in the second round of the wrestle backs. Niemeyer pinned Vandalia Sophie Bowers to advance and Jason Shaw pinned Grason Johnson to advance. Both pins came quickly.
