Carlyle’s Waughtel And Triads Crouch Advance To The IHSA State Wrestling Championship

CHAMPAIGN – Abe Wojcikiewicz and Bryce Griffin for CM came into the semi-finals both with great records and both ranked in the state but both fell in tight matches.

Wojcikiewicz came into this match undefeated in the season with a 39-0 record and his opponent Tom Bennett from Brother Rice came into this bout with a 29-1 record. Wojcikiewicz battled all three periods but ultimately dropped 3 to 2.

For Griffin, he came into this match with a record of 40-5 and went up against Aoci Bernard from Rock Island he had a 48-3 record. Griffin went strong in his match but just couldn’t get enough momentum to secure a win he dropped the match 8-4.

In the Class 1A semi-finals and a chance to move on to the championship Carlyle’s Tyson Waughtel who has been lights out through the whole tournament had another lights-out match. Waughtel came into this match with a perfect 50-0 record and was able to keep that record intact by beating Dylan Elmer from Olympia 11-4. Waughtel has a 42 to 4 point lead in this tournament. He had two shut-out matches before this match. Waughtel will face Illini Bluff Hunter Robbins in the Championship match.

In 2A at the 120-pound match Triads, Colby Crouch came in with a 33-0 record, Crouch was able to keep that recond clean and moved on to the championship match with a pinfall at 1:28 in the match by pinning Edgar Albino of Antioch.

Waterloo’s Jordan Sommers came into this match with a 43-0 record and ranked number one in his weight class. He went up against Leo Meyer of Mattoon and was able to get a tech fall 16-1 to advance to the championship. Sommers will wrestle Jake Weltha of Bloomington.
