Several Area Grapplers Placed In Champaign

CHAMPAIGN – Several area grapplers will be going to the podium at the IHSA State Wrestling Tournament on Saturday in Champaign.

In the Class 1A 113 pound 3rd place match, East Alton Wood River Aaron Niemeyer pinned Tony Keene of Harrisburg at the 2:42 mark of the match. Niemeyer closed his senior season with a 40-6 record.

Niemeyer’s teammate Jason Shaw wrestled in the 126 pound 5th place match. Shaw went up against Carter Rude of Newman and had a 14-2 win to take 5th place. Shaw closes the season with a 43-5 as a senior.

In Class 2A Civic Memorials Bradley Ruckman dropped a hard-fought match against Caden Hatton of Mahomet 8-5 in the 5th place match. Ruckman a freshman placed 6th and still will receive a medal.

In the 132 pound match, Joey Biciocci pinned Renzo Morgan at 3:59 with one second to spare in the 2nd round to place 5th. Biciocci has been to state before with Collinsville. Biciocci transferred to Civic Memorial.

Bryce Griffin of Civic Memorial battled Caleb Nobiling of Antioch in the 138 pound 3rd place match. Griffin battled all 3 rounds but dropped an 8-6 heartbreaker to finish 4th.

It was all defense in the 170-pound match Abe Wojcikiewicz of CM battled Alex Tagler of Lemont. Wojcikiewicz was able to get one point to make it 1-0 then he held that lead as time expired to place 3rd.

In Class 3A Dylan Gvillo and Drew Landau battled in both of their 5th places matches but dropped them in tight matches. For Gvillo he battled Cole Rhemrev of Stevenson in the 138-pound match. Gvillo lost a heartbreaker by a score of 10-9 to place 6th. For Landau he wrestled Antonio Alvarado in the 145-pound match he lost a 3-2 to also place 6th.

Tonight Carlyle’s Tyson Waughtel will go for the Class 1A 106 pound Championship match. He will face Hunter Robbins of Illini Bluff. Waughtel comes in with a perfect 51-0 record while Robbins has a 31-3 record.

In Class 2A Triads Colby Crouch will faceoff against Peyton Cox of Washington in the 120 pound Championship Match. Crouch has a perfect 34-0 record. Peyton Cox comes in with a 41-2 record.

Mascoutah’s Santino Robinson at 132 pounds will face Kannon Webster of Washington in the championship match

Also in Class 2A Waterloos Jordan Sommers has a perfect 43-0 record will go up against Jack Weltha(34-3) of Bloomington in the 220-pound Championship match.
