Elizabeth Marie Cope, 89, of Granite City, Illinois went to be with her Lord on June 7, 2025, at the St. Paul’s Senior Living Community in Belleville, Illinois.
She was born June 7, 2025, in Riddle, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Thomas D. and Eunice Ray (Burgess) Penney.
She married the love of her life, Reverend Alfred E. “Gene” Cope on February 14, 1957, and he passed away on March 18, 2011.
She was a retired bookkeeper and had worked for St. Francis Hospital in Peoria and St. Elizabeth Hospital in Granite City. Elizabeth was a member of City Temple and had served as a pastor’s wife with the Assembly of God church since 1960 and enjoyed the many years of service and touching the lives of many. She will be remembered for her love for God, her family and her caring heart for others. She enjoyed needlepoint and crocheting, working puzzles, watching old western movies, loved Disney, and enjoyed seeing the ocean, lighthouses and Thomas Kinkade. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with her family and friends.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kristy and Eugene Coughlin of Collinsville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gene and Tammy Cope Jr. of Granite City and Rev. Richard L. and Debbie Cope of Dayton, Texas; nine grandchildren, Michelle, Amy, Marissa, Jonathan, Emily, Tiffany, Tabitha, Timothy and Trevorr; great grandchildren, Avarey; one brother, Ule Penney; nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends.
In addition to her beloved husband of 54 years, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Adam Cope; six sisters, Izola, Dora, Eunice, Eva, Casa and Meta and five brothers, Ray, Monte, Bruce, Lonnie and Oral.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2025.
Visitation will continue at City Temple, 4751 Maryville Road in Granite City on Friday, June 13, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Randle Copeland, Rev. Roy Boyer and Rev. Sam Hart will officiate.
Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.
