Samuel “Sam” John Paul Sharp, age 92, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at Gateway Regional Medical Center. Born on November 26, 1932, in Elco, Illinois, Sam lived a life defined by resilience, devotion, and boundless generosity.
A Life Rooted in Southern Illinois Sam’s early years were shaped by the rugged beauty of Southern Illinois and the strength of family ties. Raised without his mother, he lived with various relatives while his father worked tirelessly to provide. These formative experiences instilled in Sam a deep appreciation for hard work and storytelling — tales of his youth became cherished family lore.
After graduating from Madison High School, Sam proudly served in the United States Navy. It was on the Island of Malta that fate introduced him to Irene Osmond, the love of his life. They married on September 11, 1954, beginning a remarkable journey of seventy-one years together.
Sam dedicated four decades to Granite City Steel as a scheduler, where he was respected and was involved with the Management Club and Junior Achievement. Known as a jack of all trades, he could fix, build, or restore anything with precision and pride. His home and yard were his canvas, always immaculate, always welcoming.
Whether swapping stories about his travels, going to the casino or lending a hand to a neighbor, Sam never met a stranger. His warmth, humor, and generosity touched everyone he encountered. He was a man who made friends wherever he went and left lasting impressions through kindness and laughter.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Logan and Vaden (Rice) Sharp, his brother Wesley Sharp, and daughter-in-law Jamie Sharp.
He is survived by his devoted wife Irene; loving children, Renie (Rodger, whom he considered his other son) Raub, Denise Settle, Samuel Sharp, and Jeff Sharp; grandchildren Jamie (Brad) Hutchinson, Kim (Chris) Malec, Tiffany (Ricardo) Ruiz, and Casey (Joe) Degenhart; and great-grandchildren Noah, Jackson, Lexi, Ricardo, Michael, and J.D. He also leaves behind countless friends who became family.
A Quiet Farewell Honoring Sam’s wishes, he will be cremated with no formal services. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Arrangements entrusted to Irwin Chapel, Granite City, IL.
