
Nellie M. Forrest, 88, of Wood River and formerly of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully at 9:23 a.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at Alton Memorial Hospital in Alton, Illinois.
She was born on July 13, 1937, in Granite City, Illinois, a daughter of the late Hubert and Grace (Bulander) Dixon. On June 16, 1956, Nellie married the love of her life, Willis G. Forrest, in Granite City, and he preceded her in death on February 13, 2009.
Nellie devoted many years of service as a school crossing guard with the Granite City School District, where she was known for her dedication and kindness to countless children and families. She was a faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church and treasured her time socializing with the Pontoon Beach Senior Citizens.
Above all, Nellie cherished her family. She will be fondly remembered for her warm heart, gentle spirit, and the many special moments shared with her loved ones and friends.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and April Forrest of O’Fallon, Illinois; her daughter, Linda Holmes of Roxana; grandchildren, Elizabeth Arnold, Pamela Holmes, and Dawn Holmes; great-grandchildren, Alex Arnold and Adam Arnold; her sister, Betty Forehand of New Douglas; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
In addition to her beloved husband and parents, Nellie was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Hunter, and three brothers, Clarence, Glen, and Bill Dixon.
Visitation in celebration of Nellie’s life will be held at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, on Friday, February 6, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 11:30 a.m., with Father Steve Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri.
