Bernice Schuette

Bernice M. “Marty” Schuette, 88, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, February 22, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born on July 19, 1937, in Granite City, Marty was the cherished daughter of the late Earl and Byrdie (Elliot) Joiner. A lifelong resident of the community she loved, Marty’s life was a testament to faith, devotion, and quiet strength.

On September 18, 1965, she married the love of her life, Michael Schuette, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Granite City — the very church where she was baptized, confirmed, and remained a faithful and devoted member throughout her life. For sixty beautiful years, Marty and Michael built a life rooted in love, faith, and family.

Marty’s greatest calling was that of homemaker. She created a warm and welcoming home filled with kindness, laughter, and unwavering support. While her heart belonged to her family, she also shared her talents working at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and Kmart. An avid reader and gifted writer, Marty found joy in books and in putting her thoughts to paper. Yet nothing brought her greater happiness than serving the Lord and spending precious time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Her love for her family was boundless. She was their steady presence, and their greatest encourager. Her gentle spirit, wise counsel, and steadfast faith will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, Marty was preceded in death by her beloved son, Michael Schuette II; her siblings, Mildred Howard, Virgie Thomas, and Brooxie Myers; her son-in-law, Steven Waltemate; and her cherished granddaughter, Anna.

She leaves behind her devoted husband of sixty years, Michael Schuette of Granite City; her loving children, Theresa (Jeff) Carney, Donna Waltemate, and Mark Schuette, all of Granite City; dear siblings, Myrle Page, Tommie Patrick, and Regina Sutton; her treasured grandchildren, Erica (Brad), Jeffrey (Annie), Tyler, Emily (Kai), Ashley, Brittany, and Zachary; eighteen adored great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever hold her memory close.

A celebration of Marty’s life will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Granite City. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., with funeral services to follow at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Rev. Brian Feicho. She will be laid to rest at St. John Cemetery on Maryville Road in Granite City.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a cause dear to the family. Donations will be accepted at the church.
