RiverBender Blog: It’s Your Wedding, But It’s My Big Day

It’s wedding season, y’all. And obviously that means it’s an exciting time for me specifically, who isn’t getting married anytime soon but has several friends who are.

That’s right. It’s your wedding, but I’m making it all about me.

In fact, “making it all about me” is my favorite pastime. I love to take something where I play a very small role and blow it out of proportion, so I can enjoy being the main character. We all act as the main characters in our lives, but some of us take it to the next level.

In this case, I will be playing the relatively small part of Wedding Guest. But I plan to give an Oscar-worthy performance.

(Of course, I’m kidding. I know it’s not actually about me, that no one cares what I’m wearing or what gift I buy as long as I show up and give my best wishes to the happy couple. But isn’t it fun to act like it’s all about you? Indulge me for a second. Let me overemphasize my role in these weddings.)

As a Wedding Guest, the first order of business is to decide what to wear. I have multiple spring weddings to attend this year, and no outfit that fits quite right for the occasion. This led me to one of my favorite hobbies, something I love to do but rarely let myself, lest it get out of hand: shopping. I joined the online shopping frenzy.

In truth, I rarely shop for clothes online for a few reasons. You don’t know how it fits or how it’ll actually look on you, and I don’t like wasting my time and money buying something only to return it a few days later. Sure, there are more options online, but it’s a pain. Call me old-fashioned, but I’d much rather go to a store and be content with whatever is on the rack.

But in this spring weather, preparing for these spring weddings, I pushed myself to try something new and intimidating: I ordered from a fancy store online. Not too fancy, obviously, but not Target.

And I was reminded why I hate shopping online. What do you mean the model in this dress is 5’11″ and wearing a size XS? What is the actual difference between a size 8 and a 10 and what do those numbers mean? Hiss.

But I faced my fears and clicked “add to cart” and can happily announce that I mostly guessed right and found a few dresses in my size. So, it’s your wedding, but I’m looking good. Sorry to the bride, who will be outshined by me, sitting in the back row in my new floral print dress. This is, after all, my day.

The second order of business is to actually attend the wedding. Yes, that’s how my mind works. Step one, find an outfit. Step two, go to the event. I don’t generally care a ton about what I wear and how I look (at least, no more than others), but the most exciting part of these events is finding a fit and glamming up a little. So, with step one completed, onto the next part: the wedding itself.

And, all jokes aside, I am excited for these weddings. My friends are getting married! I’m happy for them and eager to celebrate the next chapter in their lives.

It’s a little wild that so many of my buddies are getting married or engaged. It feels like we’re still 17, so it’s hard to believe that we’re actually old enough to do all these big, adult things.

But it’s also so freaking cool to see my friends find their people. I’m so happy for these buddies of mine, many of whom I’ve known for years and comforted through heartbreaks and commiserated with after bad dates. And now they’re getting married to their soulmates?? What an awesome thing. What a lucky, wonderful adventure.

I’m excited to celebrate with them. Plus, of course, I expect it to be time for my wedding soon; after all, I do look really good in those dresses. And when the time comes, I give my friends permission to make it all about them.
