An officer went to the residence and saw an adult male standing outside with a weapon, police said. The officer heard a gunshot and the suspect entered the residence. Police initiated an officer-in-need-of-aid call for an armed and possibly barricaded suspect, and responding officers positioned themselves near the residence to contain the suspect.

At about 2:55 a.m., officers saw the suspect break a window and “flourish a weapon from inside the home,” police said. A Woodson Terrace Police officer fired his service weapon.

The St. Louis County Police Tactical Operations Unit and the Crisis Negotiations Team responded and attempted to make contact with the suspect, but “were met with negative results,” police said.

Just after 5:30 a.m., Tactical Operations Unit officers entered the residence and found the suspect dead inside, police said. No officers were physically injured. Police said the victim of the initial assault call suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment.

The deceased was identified Feb. 23 as Robert Lewis, 71, of the 9400 block of Cote Brilliante Avenue in Overland, Missouri, 63114.

The City of Overland Police Department requested that detectives from the St. Louis County Police Bureau of Crimes Against Persons assume responsibility for the case, police said. The Woodson Terrace officer involved is 29 years old with eight years of law enforcement experience.

Police said the investigation remains active and that preliminary details could change. Anyone with information was asked to contact the St. Louis County Police Department at 636-529-8210 to speak to investigators.
