Byron Blackwell

Byron Keith Blackwell, AKA Crush, was born December 29, 1964 in East St. Louis, Ill., passed away April 18, 2026 at his home in O’Fallon, Ill. He graduated from East St. Louis Senior High in 1983. Following graduation, Byron enlisted in the United States Army, where he served faithfully for 12 years. His military service reflected his commitment, discipline and dedication to something greater than himself.

Byron was a man of many talents and passions. He was an artist, poet and comedian, known for his creativity and ability to bring laughter and insight to those around him. His artistic talent and humor were reflections of his life experiences and his deep appreciation for storytelling and expression. He was also blessed with friendships that spanned from childhood through adulthood, bonds rooted in loyalty, shared history and genuine connection.

Byron was preceded in death by his father and siblings: Yolanda Walker, Franklin Blackwell, Henry B1ackwell, LaVonnie Nettles-Armstrong, Stacey Nettles, Linda Kennel, Ronnie Henderson and Wendell Henderson.

He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Angela Blackwell; his devoted mother Clara Henderson; his children Byron Blackwell, Jr., Raihjhu Blackwell, and Ky’Eisha (Antonio) Wood. Bonus children Derrick, Endia, Derika and Darius Moore. His treasured grandchildren Aiyuana Glen, Jaliyah Burris, RJ, Derundrae and Raheim Blackwell, Avery Wood, Denim Moore and Ace Adolph. Byron is also survived by a loving family of siblings: Veldrena Blackwell, Timothy Blackwell, Rhonda Blackwell, Adrienne (D’Angelo) Woodberry, Ryan B1ackwell, Sr., Joe Willie Henderson, Michael (Michelle) Nettles, Sr., Myra Nettles, Moses (Katina) McAfee, Jr., Louise McAfee, Donald (Pondella) McAfee, Christine (Paul) McAfee-Banks and Phyllis Shanklin, along with a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins, extended family members and dear lifelong friends.

Byron’s life was marked by service, creativity, humor, and connection. He will be remembered for his artistic spirit, his dedication to family, his enduring friendships, and the legacy he leaves behind in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Farewell Service for Mr. Blackwell will be held on Monday, April 27, 2026 at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 801 S. 50th St., Cahokia Heights, IL 62207. Visitation will begin at 10 am. Funeral Service will begin at Noon. Repast immediately following at Chakal Plaza, 5108 State St., East St. Louis, IL 62203. Burial: All are invited to meet at 8:30 am, Tuesday, April 28, 2026 at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, (church will not be open) where the Funeral Procession will depart PROMPTLY at 9 am for a Graveside Service with military honors to be held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.
