Raymond Straedey

Raymond “Ray” William Straedey, 88, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 14, 2026. Born on December 28, 1937, in St. Louis, Missouri, Ray was the beloved son of the late Ernest W. and Katherine (Gummersheimer) Straedey.

A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Ray served his country with honor and carried that same sense of dedication and integrity throughout every aspect of his life. On November 5, 1964, he married Virginia Fernandez, the love of his life and steadfast companion. Together, they shared sixty-one years of love, devotion, laughter, and countless cherished memories.

Ray was a faithful member of Unity Baptist Church in Granite City. He retired after many years of service as a salesman with the Suburban Journal News, where his friendly nature and gift for conversation allowed him to build lasting relationships throughout the community.

Those who knew Ray will remember his quick wit, warm smile, and remarkable sense of humor. He was an avid reader with a deep appreciation for history and a talent for telling jokes that could brighten any room. Above all else, Ray treasured his family. Whether sharing stories, celebrating milestones, or simply enjoying time together, the moments spent with those he loved were the greatest joys of his life.

In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his brother, Ernest R. Straedey.

He leaves behind his devoted wife, Virginia Straedey of Granite City; his loving children, Debbie (Larry) Feilner of Highland and Don Vitale of Granite City; his treasured grandchildren, Dana (Trey) Baugher and Deanna (Jeff) Weinacht; and his adored great-grandchildren, Carter Baugher, Lucas Baugher, Maxton Weinacht, and Colton Weinacht. He is also survived by his niece, nephew, extended family members, and many dear friends who will forever hold his memory close to their hearts.

Ray’s legacy is one of faith, service, humor, and unconditional love. He lived a life defined not by grand gestures, but by the quiet ways he cared for others, the laughter he shared, and the unwavering devotion he showed to his family. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Monday, June 22, 2026, at Irwin Chapel in Granite City, Illinois.
