
Father John R. Madigan, OMI, 75, died Sunday, June 14, 2026, at the Benedictine Living Community at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, Belleville, IL.
Father John was born in 1950 to the late John Sr. and Elizabeth, nee McMahon, Madigan in Buffalo, NY. He joined the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, pronouncing his first religious vows in 1971. After his seminary studies in Washington, DC, he was ordained a priest in 1977.
Other than serving as Vocation Director for two years, from 1981 to 1983, he served many years as a parish priest in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Florida. He was also the Vicar for Religious in the Archdiocese of Miami for several years. In 2007, he moved to Belleville where he became the Oblate Chaplain-Director of the Missionary Association of Mary Immaculate. He retired from the MAMI position in 2020. He took up residence at the Benedictine Living Community in 2011.
Mourning Fr. John’s passing are his brothers, Timothy of Rochester, NY, and Dennis (Mary Jo) of Lancaster, NY. He also has one niece and two nephews. He leaves behind some 3400 Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate serving in 60 countries.
In lieu of flowers, donations for the missions of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate would be greatly appreciated.
Visitation: Friends may pay their respects from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the Benedictine Living Community Chapel at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, Belleville, IL.
Funeral: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the Benedictine Living Community Chapel at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, Belleville, IL.
Burial will be at St. Henry’s Oblate Cemetery, Belleville, IL.
