Five Dead In Tragic East St. Louis Shootings Case

EAST ST. LOUIS — Illinois State Police are investigating shootings in East St. Louis that left five people dead, authorities said at a 5 p.m. press conference on Sunday, July 12, 2026, with two juvenile suspects in custody and charges being sought.

ISP said at a press conference that a family was targeted in multiple shootings across East St. Louis, resulting in the deaths of five people. The Illinois State Police have joined with East St. Louis Police and local law enforcement to investigate the killings. ISP reported the shootings took place late Saturday into Sunday.

Two 16-year-old suspects are in custody, according to ISP Director Brendan Kelly.

ISP said one person was killed at North 39th Street and Summit Avenue, and three more were killed in the Samuel Gompers Housing Development.

Three people were shot at Jones Park, located across the street from the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation. One of those victims died; the two surviving victims have been hospitalized.

ISP said the five who died in the shooting are: Patricia A. May, Cheri L. May, Devin D. May, Shania Thompson and Quentin L. Thompson.

Police also said the two suspects were found in a vehicle in Frank Holten State Park.
