ST. LOUIS – An early morning investigation into a fatal pedestrian crash on Interstate 55 on Monday, Aug. 24, 2026, led police to a nearby home, where officers found a man dead in what investigators are treating as a murder-suicide.
St. Louis Metropolitan Police District 3 officers responded just before 5 a.m. Aug. 24 to a call for an accident on northbound I-55 before the Arsenal exit, where they found what is believed to be an adult male who had been struck by multiple vehicles and died at the scene.
SLMPD Accident Reconstruction investigators took over the case. During their investigation, they suspected the pedestrian may have jumped from the Utah overpass onto the highway.
Investigators went to the Utah overpass and found blood on the railing over the northbound lanes. As they continued canvassing for evidence and cameras that may have captured the incident, they found an open door in the 3300 block of South 9th Street.
Police approached the house, looked inside the open door, and saw blood on the floor of the entryway. They also saw a man in his 40s who was dead, with a knife next to him.
Homicide detectives were called to the scene and began an investigation. Police said several cameras were found in the area.
St. Louis Metropolitan Police said based on the preliminary investigation, the suspect, an adult male, was seen on camera outside the residence before walking to the Utah overpass bridge and jumping onto the highway. Police believe the suspect is the same adult male who was struck on northbound I-55 before Arsenal Street. Investigators also believe the homicide victim and suspect knew each other.
