EAST ALTON – The Lewis and Clark Community College Trailblazers Men’s Hockey team will drop the puck on its inaugural season, Friday, Sept. 18, at East Alton Ice Arena.
The Trailblazers are set to face the McKendree University Bearcats at 7:15 p.m.
In honor of the historic moment, Lewis and Clark is encouraging community members, team members and hockey fans alike to pack the stands in their best Trailblazer blue. Admission to all home games is free.
The home opener will include a visit from Blazer the Newfie, LC’s mascot, giveaways, and information about LC athletics and academics.
Head Coach Tyler Elbrecht says his team is excited to hit the ice. Their biggest strength going into this first season will be defense and a penchant for hard work.
“We’ll work hard, have fun doing it, and be ready to play anybody,” he said during a recent preseason media day.
LC’s new hockey program offers a unique opportunity for area athletes to compete in ACHA hockey without having to go into student loan debt.
“You can come here, play college hockey, get your two-year degree, transfer later and save a lot of money,” said freshman goalie Barron Arbeiter. “The affordability aspect definitely attracted me.”
The team still has open spots on its roster. In order to play, athletes must be registered at Lewis and Clark. Anyone interested can contact Coach Elbrecht at telbrecht@lc.edu.
Lewis and Clark is also recruiting for a women’s ice hockey team. For more information, contact Athletic Director Cody Zippmann at czippmann@l.edu.
