The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Shaniya Lewis, 20, of St. Louis, and Nayonna Griffin, 20, of Florissant, Mo., with second-degree assault involving a special victim and resisting or interfering with arrest for a felony. Each is being held on a $100,000 cash-only bond, with no 10% payment option.

According to summaries of the probable cause statements, the altercation occurred Oct. 11 at a business in the 12100 block of Lusher Road. The officer was an off-duty Hillsdale Police Department officer working a secondary job at the business.

The statements allege Griffin began throwing items at the officer, prompting him to approach her. Lewis then stopped the officer, struggled with him and threw him to the ground, according to the statements.

Authorities allege Lewis repeatedly punched the officer while he was on the ground and Griffin stomped on his head. During the struggle, Lewis grabbed the officer’s firearm but was unable to remove it from its holster, the statements say.

As arriving police attempted to detain Griffin, she continued grabbing the officer’s hair, flailed her body, kicked, attempted to run and held her hands away to avoid being handcuffed, according to the statements.

The officer was taken to a hospital for his injuries. The altercation was captured on video, according to the probable cause summaries.

St. Louis County Police Department North County Precinct officers are leading the investigation.

The charges are accusations. Lewis and Griffin are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
