
Charles Albert Shane Sr., a beloved husband, father, and proud Marine, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 30th, 2026, at the age of 90. Born in Granite City, IL, on March 10th, 1936, Charles lived a life dedicated to family, hard work, and service to his country.
Charles is survived by his devoted wife, Frances M. Shane, and his loving sons, Charles A. (Beth) Shane Jr., of Alton, IL., John E. (Shelia) Shane, of Galveston, TX., Grandchildren, Carlee (Stephen) Turner, Haley Shane, great grandchildren, Shane and Lucas Turner, brothers, Bill and Bob Shane. He was preceded in death by his parents, Winfrey, and Susan Shane, 4 siblings.
Charles served his country honorably as a member of the United States Marine Corps, a testament to his dedication and bravery. Following his military service, he worked as a laborer at Granite City Steel, where he was admired for his steadfast work ethic and integrity. He was a passionate wood carver who found great joy in sharing his creations with those he loved and people around him. He also had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and thoroughly enjoyed hunting trips with family and friends.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during the visitation, which will be held at Gent Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Alton, IL, on Monday, October 5th, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A funeral service to celebrate Charles’s life will take place at the same location on Tuesday, October 6th, 2026, at 10:00 am. Interment will take place at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, honoring Charles’s commitment to supporting veterans.
