Glen Carbon Man Charged With Causing Injury During Fifth DUI

GLEN CARBON – A local man with multiple prior DUI convictions faces new felonies after allegedly injuring another person in a collision while under the influence.

David A. Peters, 68, of Glen Carbon, was charged on Oct. 7, 2026, with two Class 1 felony counts of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol. He also faces one count each of aggravated driving while under the influence resulting in great bodily harm and aggravated driving with a blood alcohol level of .08 or more resulting in great bodily harm (both enhanced Class 4 felonies).

Peters allegedly drove a motor vehicle on Illinois State Route 159 in Glen Carbon while under the influence of alcohol on May 27, 2026. Charging documents allege his operation of the vehicle while under the influence was the cause of a motor vehicle crash that resulted in great bodily harm to another individual on the same date.

This would mark Peters’s fifth DUI violation after previously being convicted of the same offense on four prior occasions, including twice in Madison County in 1987 and 1999 and twice in St. Clair County in 1989 and 1997.

The Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to deny pretrial release for Peters in this latest case, noting he “has a lengthy history of driving under the influence.”

“Defendant was driving his vehicle, which hit the victim and her passenger in a two-vehicle collision,” the petition states, noting the victim sustained an injury that required intensive surgery.

The petition further states Peters “smelled of intoxicants and failed field sobriety tests,” with preliminary breath test results showing a blood alcohol concentration of .129.

The Glen Carbon Police Department presented the latest case against Peters, who was ordered remanded to jail for his initial court appearance in this case.

All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
