GRANITE CITY – Granite City Police responded to multiple reports of shots fired on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, 2025, during celebrations that prompted concerns over public safety.
Officers investigated two incidents where individuals were recklessly discharging firearms into the air or ground, leading to the execution of separate search warrants at two residences.
As a result of the warrants, several people were taken into custody, and officers confiscated eight firearms along with numerous rounds of ammunition. The Granite City Police Department emphasized the dangers of firing weapons recklessly, comparing it to driving under the influence.
“While we are thankful no one was injured, shooting a firearm recklessly is just as dangerous as driving while intoxicated,” the department said in a statement. “We take this behavior very seriously, and it will not be tolerated in Granite City.”
The department urged residents to exercise caution and prioritize safety at all times, including the holiday season.
