SWANSEA – A traffic stop attempt over mismatched license plates led to a crash and arrest Sept. 7, 2026 near North Belt West and North 17th Street, according to the Swansea Police Department.
Tazia J. Beison was arrested at approximately 3 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 7, after a Swansea Police officer attempted to stop a 2003 Hyundai Sonata because the license plates displayed on the vehicle did not return to the Hyundai, police said. The driver, identified by police as Beison, did not stop and fled from the officer.
Police said the vehicle continued approximately 1,000 feet toward the intersection of North Belt West and North 17th Street, where it entered the intersection against a red traffic signal and was involved in a crash.
After the crash, Beison and several occupants of the vehicle attempted to flee the scene on foot but were apprehended, police said.
Beison was charged with aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer involving property damage exceeding $300 and obstructing a peace officer.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing regarding the other occupants of the vehicle. The Illinois State Police handled the traffic crash.
All persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
