EDWARDSVILLE — Dia Kannan rallied from a first-set loss to lead the Edwardsville girls tennis team to a sweep of Quincy in the Southern Illinois Tennis Duals on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2-26, winning at No. 1 singles as the Tigers took every singles and doubles match.
Edwardsville Head Girls Tennis Coach Dave Lipe said he was very pleased with the shutout result over a team who is also a sectional competitor. The results included eight singles matches, three doubles matches and an exhibition doubles match.
Kannan won 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 at No. 1 singles over Quincy’s Alex Hamby. Lipe praised her focus and perseverance, calling the victory “one of the signature wins of her career so far.” He also described Quincy as a very good team.
Edwardsville won the remaining seven singles matches in straight sets. Bina Selimi prevailed 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2, while Amelia Hill won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 and Grace Hohman earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 4.
Kendall Thoroman won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5, followed by Grace Knabe’s 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6. Addy Whittington won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 7, and Allie Schwartz took the No. 8 match 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles, Kannan and Selimi won 8-2 at No. 1, Hill and Thoroman prevailed 8-3 at No. 2, and Hohman and Knabe won 8-0 at No. 3. Whittington and Schwartz added an 8-0 victory in the exhibition match.
