CHAMPAIGN – Civic Memorial senior wrestler Bryce Griffin (49-2) concluded the IHSA State Wrestling Tournament with a state championship on Saturday in the 2A 157lbs class.
“Its great I’ve been wanting to win the state since forever. Last year I felt like I had it but then Webster bumped up and I didnt have it. Griffin said.
Griffin beat Seth Digby from Lake Forest, a 5-1 decision.
He placed 2nd last year. He lost to Kannon Webster in the championship match.
Griffin advanced out of the Bethalto Regional with a win after he pinned Ethan Fordham in the championship match.
“ I’ve worked so hard to get here this year. When it comes to the state series I want to pin them as quickly as possible. I wanted to show I was on another level.” Griffin said
Griffin then won the Mahomet Seymour Sectional by pinning Evan Willock.
During his time in Champaign he was able to get through competition pretty easily. In his first match he pinned Xander York in 39 seconds.
He won by decision 9-2 in the second round over Harrison Konder. He won by major decision against Nicholas Cheshier in the semi-final round to set up the championship match.
