Marquette Catholic Names Boys And Girls Basketball Coaches Wednesday

ALTON – Marquette Catholic Explorers names the boys and girls head basketball coaches Wednesday. Whitney Sykes – Rogers will replace Lee Green as the head girls basketball coach, and Cody Best will replace Steve Medford as the boys head basketball coach.

Sykes-Rogers was the Marquette junior varsity coach last season and before that Sykes-Rogers was the Granite City coach for seven seasons before resigning in 2021. Sykes-Rogers played high school basketball at Granite City before moving on and playing at SIUE where she holds the record in 3-pointers with 277 for SIUE. Green resigned after six seasons and a 114-51 record and will now be the head basketball coach for the boys at Civic Memorial.

“I am honored to be taking over at Marquette Catholic,” said Coach Sykes-Rogers. “I look forward to the challenge and opportunity to build on the tremendous traditions of the Explorers and can’t wait to get started.”

Cody Best played high school basketball at Staunton before graduating in 2009.  Best spent three seasons as a head coach at Mount Olive, before working the past two seasons as an assistant at Highland. Best replaced Medford who resigned in mid-May to devote more time to his wife and three sons.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to lead the Explorers basketball program,” Coach Best said. “The program has a tradition of competing at the highest level and I look forward to the challenge of continuing that standard.”
