Two Workers Dead After Manhole Incident

EDWARDSVILLE – Edwardsville Police and Fire Department rushed to the 100 block of East Union Street near Main Street for two construction workers that were unconscious in a manhole around 7:00 p.m Friday night. Police Officials confirm that both workers are dead.

The incident took place at a housing complex that is under construction. Police officials confirmed that when one of the police officers arrived on the scene he tried to go into the manhole to rescue the workers, but because of the depth and the fumes, he had to be rescued. The officer was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Madison County Coroner’s Office is also on scene. Firefighters are working to recover the bodies.
