Several Area Wrestlers Will Be Bringing Back Medals After Final Day Of Wrestling

CHAMPAIGN – The metro-east will be well represented on the medal stand later tonight at the IHSA State Wrestling Finals.

In 1A Roxana will have three on the podium. In the 132 lbs weight class Brandon Green Jr. placed 5th. Lyndon Thies placed 4th in the 157 pound class, and James Herring placed 3rd in 285. 

In 2A Bethalto Civic Memorial Caleb Scott placed third in the 126 weight class. 

Green, who was a sophomore last year, did not place a year ago in Champaign. In the 5th match he faced Keygan Jennings of Farmington. 

It was all tied up at the end of regulation time. In OT Green came out and threw Jennings to take the win and place 5th. 

“ Last year I let my nerves get the best of me and this year I came in to have fun and attack, I know I can score on anyone. I knew I was going to win in sudden death. My mind set was perfect.” Brandon Green Jr. said

Lyndon Thies dropped a 10-2 major decision to Liam Fox of Murphysboro to place 4th. Last year Thies was a freshman and did not make it to Champaign. 

In the 285 match James Herring squeaked by with a 3-2 win over Cade Odell of Princeton. Herring did not place last year. 

“ I beat Odell earlier this year so I had confidence coming into this match. I came out and was able to get a win.” James Herring said

In 2A Caleb Scott of Civic Memorial was able to up his hardware from last year. Scott placed 5th a year ago and this year a third place finish. 

Scott was able to pin Daniel McGhee of Rock Island at the 3:33 mark. 

“ I needed to work on my shots from last year. I didn’t have a shot last year that I could rely on. He attacks hard so I had to get my shots in.” Caleb Scott said. 

EAWR’s Drake Champlain and CM’s Bryce Griffin will compete tonight for a championship.
