Fay Sumner

Fay Sumner, age 88, of Caseyville, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at her home, surrounded by the love of her family. Fay was born on January 4, 1938, in East St. Louis, Illinois, a beloved daughter of the late Alex and Clara (Cadle) Stout.

Fay was a woman who found joy in life’s simple pleasures and cherished time spent with those she loved most. She delighted in bingo games with her sisters and children, trips to the casino, dining out, shopping, and always keeping her nails done just right. In her later years, Fay made her home with her daughter May, whose devotion, love, and constant care ensured Fay was never alone and always comforted. Their home was filled with laughter, family gatherings, and moments Fay treasured deeply.

She enjoyed watching her favorite television shows, especially The Young and the Restless, The Price Is Right, and many beloved movies. Summers were her favorite—spent sitting on the porch, surrounded by family, watching the world go by and admiring the flowers she so loved. Fay took pleasure in knowing the daily rhythms of the neighborhood, often asking the time and noting when neighbors would arrive home. Though she dreaded the cold weather that kept her indoors, her warm spirit never faded.

Fay will be remembered for her gentle presence, her love of family, and the comfort she brought simply by being near. She will be deeply missed by all who had the blessing of knowing and loving her.

In addition to her parents, Fay was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Charles Sumner; her daughter, Lorraine Coke; and her siblings, Jewell Hornbeck, Alta Mae McCoy, Pearl Hawks, Ray Stout, and Jute Stout.

She is survived by her loving children, Tommy Gabriel, Mark Gabriel, Chris (Brian) Mezel, Fay Blakey (née Gabriel), Bruce “Alan” Gabriel, May (Lyman T.) Bateman, Charles (Susan) Sumner, and Tina (Richard) Frazer; her dear siblings, Bonnie Hornbeck and Alice Luna; twenty cherished grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

In celebration of her life, visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 16, 2026, at Irwin Chapel in Glen Carbon, Illinois, followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. Fay will be laid to rest with her beloved husband, Charles, at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri.

Memorial donations may be made to Vitas Hospice and will be accepted at the funeral chapel.
