Firearm Display Triggers Shooting During Swansea Arrest Attempt

SWANSEA — The Illinois State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Sunday morning, Jan. 11, 2026, in Swansea.

At approximately 7:15 a.m. on January 11, 2026, St. Clair County deputies responded to a report of a domestic incident where a subject was possibly stabbed. While en route, deputies received information about a person walking in the roadway with a firearm near the residence.

Deputies encountered the individual in the 2800 block of Collinsville Avenue. According to the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department, the subject displayed a firearm, prompting one deputy to discharge their duty weapon, striking the individual.

A struggle followed as deputies attempted to take the person into custody. The subject was ultimately apprehended and transported to a local hospital with injuries.

No officers were reported injured.

The Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 6 was requested by the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department to conduct an independent investigation into the shooting. ISP special agents will carry out a thorough and timely inquiry.

Upon completion, the case will be forwarded to the St. Clair County State’s Attorney for review.

The investigation remains active and ongoing, and no further details have been released at this time.
