East Alton Man Faces Multiple Surgeries After Home Fire

EAST ALTON – Chris Carpenter, a 20-year-old from East Alton, is undergoing multiple surgeries for severe second- and third-degree burns after a fire destroyed his family’s home, and relatives have launched a GoFundMe to help cover medical costs and the family’s homeowners’ insurance deductible as they begin rebuilding.

The fundraiser was organized by Nathan-Janae Hausman and Marissa Carpenter. In the GoFundMe description, the organizers wrote that Steve Carpenter and his wife, Hannah, are “facing an unimaginable crisis” after their son was hospitalized and began receiving intensive care.

“Chris will have his first surgery of many on February 25, and doctors have told us he will likely be in the hospital for at least one to two months, followed by a period of rehabilitation,” the post states.

An update posted Wednesday, Feb. 26, states Chris underwent his first surgery, including skin graft procedures. The update also said his father, Steve Carpenter, was recently discharged from the hospital.

According to the GoFundMe, the home in East Alton “was destroyed by a devastating fire,” and the organizers said the family is dealing with both emotional strain and financial pressure.

“The funds raised through this campaign will go directly toward covering Chris’s medical expenses and helping with the homeowners’ insurance deductible so they can start rebuilding their lives,” the post states.
