TROY, IL. – Madison County authorities said the Illinois Secretary of State Bomb Squad will conduct controlled detonations on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, as investigators continue looking into a fatal house fire and reported explosion on W. Kirsch Road in Troy, Illinois.
The controlled detonations will involve “several devices” and will be carried out throughout the day at two separate locations southeast of Troy, according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office said many emergency vehicles will be present until the operation is finished.
The investigation stems from a response late Sunday, April 5, 2026, when Madison County Sheriff’s deputies and the Troy Fire Department were called at 11:14 p.m. on Sunday to the 8000 block of W. Kirsch Road for a structure fire with people reported trapped inside the residence, the sheriff’s office said. Authorities said they also received information that an explosion occurred.
As first responders arrived, they found one person with significant burn injuries who was later transported to a St. Louis-area hospital for medical treatment, the sheriff’s office said. A few residents were able to escape the house without injuries.
Firefighters later found that three people inside the structure had died, the sheriff’s office said.
Madison County Sheriff’s detectives are investigating the incident along with the Madison County Coroner’s Office, the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, according to the sheriff’s office. Several other area fire departments also responded to assist.
