EAST ST. LOUIS – The East St. Louis Police Department responded to an incident involving a suicidal individual on the Eads Bridge in East St. Louis on Thursday, April 9, 2026, where officers found a person who had climbed over the railing on the westbound side of the bridge and threatened to jump.
As a safety precaution, westbound traffic was temporarily shut down, the East St. Louis Police Department said. The department requested assistance from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department to restrict eastbound traffic, while the St. Louis Fire Department staged along the riverfront for rescue.
East St. Louis Police said officers and firefighters used coordinated de-escalation techniques and persuaded the individual to come to safety “without further incident.”
The person was taken into custody and transported to St. Louis University Hospital for evaluation, accompanied by EMS personnel and officers.
Police credited multiple agencies for the response, including the East St. Louis Police Department, East St. Louis Fire Department, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, St. Louis Fire and Rescue, Caseyville Police Department, Missouri Highway Patrol, and MedStar EMS.
