EAST ST. LOUIS – Illinois State Police special agents have arrested a Summerfield man and charged him with first-degree murder and attempted murder after the shooting death of his 31-year-old son in East St. Louis, authorities said.
Anthony L. Powe, 49, was arrested by Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 6 Public Safety Enforcement Group special agents, police said on Monday, April 13, 2026. Powe is charged with first-degree murder, a Class M felony, and attempted murder, a Class X felony.
The East St. Louis Police Department requested Illinois State Police assistance on Friday, April 10, 20206, in a homicide investigation in the area of 22nd and Market streets in East St. Louis.
Police officers found a deceased victim in a vehicle with gunshot wounds, later identified as Devonta A. McCray, 31, of Belleville. A second victim was found nearby with gunshot injuries, police said.
After an investigation, special agents identified Powe as the suspect, the state police said, adding that Powe is McCray’s father.
On April 11, 2026, the case was presented to St. Clair County State’s Attorney James Gomric, and the charges were filed. Powe was being held at the St. Clair County Jail pending his first court appearance.
Police said no further information was available at this time.
The charges are not evidence against the defendant, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
