BROOKLYN, IL — Today, Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski (IL-13) joined local leaders to announce $2 million in Community Project Funding she secured for the Village of Brooklyn, IL. The funding for Brooklyn is part of a broader $34 million investment across Budzinski’s district, aimed at tackling long-standing challenges, from resolving chronic flooding to enhancing the safety of local drinking water.

Founded in 1829 by Priscilla “Mother” Baltimore, Brooklyn, Illinois, holds the distinction of being the first predominantly African-American town to incorporate in the U.S. (1873). Situated near St. Louis, it served as a vital Underground Railroad stop for people escaping slavery, initially known as a “freedom village”.

“Today is a moment of hope for the people of Brooklyn and a powerful step toward a brighter future. From the moment this project came to my desk, I knew we had to act. I’m incredibly proud to have delivered these funds and can’t wait to see the impact this center will have on the local economy and the everyday lives of those who call Brooklyn home,” said Congresswoman Budzinski.

“I just feel like Brooklyn has been behind the times for so long,” said Mayor Atkins. “Right now, I’m feeling good about it — Brooklyn is on the move like never before.”

“This historic community, which has persevered and overcome so many hurdles, deserves investment and the support needed to thrive,” said Representative Hoffman. “We need to build on this moment by working together on the state, local and federal level on priorities to further revitalize this great community.”
