ST. LOUIS – A sinkhole near Interstate 44 and North Broadway in downtown St. Louis continued to disrupt traffic Sunday, June 14, 2026, as the City of St. Louis and partner agencies, including the Missouri Department of Transportation, responded ahead of the Monday morning commute.
In an update issued June 14, 2026, city officials said the sinkhole site has been contained and secured, while multiple street and highway closures remain in place in the area. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has confirmed that it does not believe there are larger geographical concerns in the area.
St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer issued this statement on Monday morning, June 15, 2026: “Please be safe while traveling and be patient as the City and our partners work to address the sinkhole near I-44 and North Broadway. Situations like this remind us that our City’s great history comes with aging infrastructure that needs support. I know that our City departments and divisions, along with our partners, are committed not only to addressing this issue but also to making our City more resilient overall.”
Officials urged the public to be patient while traveling near the site, avoid the area for safety, and allow repair crews to work.
The Missouri Highway Department issued this information on street and highway closures because of the sinkhole:
- On Interstate 70, only the eastbound express lanes are closed. No other ramps or lanes are closed on I-70 in either direction as it continues over the Mississippi River.
- The movement from eastbound I-70 that becomes westbound I-44 is closed, and traffic heading toward downtown must exit at Tucker Boulevard.
- Eastbound I-44 toward downtown is closed at the Poplar Street Bridge. Traffic heading downtown is advised to use the Park Avenue exit.
- Broadway Avenue, on both sides of the interstate, is closed at Biddle Street. Fourth Street is also closed north of Washington Avenue.
- In addition, the ramp from westbound I-64 toward Walnut Street and eastbound I-44 is closed. Those seeking access to downtown can use the Ninth Street exit.
Officials said GPS software may provide alternative routes based on closures, but commuters are encouraged to check MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map at traveler.modot.org for the most up-to-date traveler information.
The city also said the water main break has been contained and that there are no service disruptions to residents or businesses at this time.
The Water Division has activated partners and contractors to assess the situation and begin construction and repairs over the coming weeks, according to the update.
Residents are reminded to contact the Citizen Services Bureau to report any disruption to city services by calling 311 within the city or (314) 622-4800 from outside city limits.
