Josef “Zip” James Banks, 70, of Venice, Illinois, went home to be with his Lord and Savior at 1:33 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City.
Born on March 17, 1956, in Munich, Germany, Josef was the beloved son of the late James “Solo” Banks and Josepha “Bobbie” (Huber) Banks. He attended school in Munich before immigrating to the United States with his family. He completed his education in Madison School District #12 and proudly graduated from Madison High School with the Class of 1976.
Josef was a dedicated and hardworking man throughout his life. He began his career working alongside his family at Banks Store, where he enjoyed serving the community. He later worked for Kraft Foods, the MPC Facility, and Casa Gallardo before retiring after many years of faithful service.
Affectionately known as “Zip,” Josef had a kind heart, a welcoming smile, and never met a stranger. He enjoyed spending countless hours at Lee Park in Venice, where he formed many lasting friendships. His faith was the foundation of his life, and he was a devoted member of Metro East Worship Center. Josef found great joy in worship, fellowship, and serving the Lord alongside his church family. He treasured the friendships he shared with his classmates from the Madison High School Class of 1976 and remained proud of those lifelong connections. His warm spirit, gentle nature, and genuine love for others touched the lives of everyone who knew him.
Josef leaves to cherish his memory Tyrone and Debra Burt; Debra King; Reverend James and Mrs. Harrell; Lunita Allen; Bryant Campbell; Reverend Conrad Crook; Johnny Crook; the loving congregation of Metro East Worship Center; his longtime friends, the Massie family; and many other cherished friends whose lives were blessed by his kindness and unwavering faith.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be held at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, on Sunday, July 26, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. until the time of funeral services at 3:00 p.m. Reverend James Harrell will officiate.
