William “Bill” Calvin Tanner, of Granite City, IL, passed away on August 25, 2026, at the age of 79. He was born on November 10, 1946, in St. Louis, MO, to the late William Arthur Tanner and Joy K. (Hefner) French.
Bill proudly served his country in the United States Army. Following his military service, he dedicated 47 years to his career as a truck driver for MOPAC. A member of the Teamsters 600, American Legion, and VFW, Bill took pride in staying connected to his community.
On August 10, 1966, Bill married the love of his life, Donna Darlene (née Smith), at Fort Bliss, Texas. Earlier this month, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary: A remarkable milestone marking six decades spent side by side, building a family and a life together. Bill was a good man whose greatest priority was always providing for and caring for his family.
Outside of his day-to-day duties, Bill enjoyed a little friendly competition. An avid billiards player, he could often be found playing pool at least three times a week. He also played horseshoes weekly, a hobby he shared with his daughter, and enjoyed a game of darts from time to time. Bill had a remarkable green thumb, and he took great pride in his garden and loved to share the fruits and vegetables of his labor with his neighbors.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Fred Tanner and David Tanner; his son, William Calvin Tanner Jr.; and his grandson, William “Billy” Lijewski.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 60 years, Donna; his daughter, Judy Lijewski; his siblings, Janet Thorton and Ronald (Kim) Tanner; his sister-in-law, Toni Tanner; his grandchildren, Nathan Lijewski and Taylor Brewer; and 3 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Irwin Chapel in Granite City, IL. Memorial contributions may be made in Bill’s honor to the charity of one’s choice.
