GRANITE CITY — Illinois State Police said on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026, it continues to investigate an officer-involved shooting in Granite City that left a 40-year-old man dead after officers responded Aug. 24, 2026, to a report of an armed suspect in the 2000 block of Edison Avenue.
The investigation is being conducted at the request of the Granite City Police Department and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, state police said in an update today.
According to Illinois State Police, Granite City Police and Madison County Sheriff’s officers responded at approximately 10:19 a.m. Aug. 24, 2026, and encountered Ryan N. Cerentano, who was armed with a handgun and a long gun.
State Police said new information has identified two weapons, and the long gun was later confirmed to be a replica.
Cerentano did not comply with officers’ commands to drop the weapons, state police said. A Granite City Police officer and a Madison County Sheriff’s officer discharged firearms, striking Cerentano.
Cerentano was transported to an area hospital, where he later died of his injuries, it was announced last Friday. No officers were injured.
State Police said the investigation remains open and ongoing. Upon completion, the case will be submitted to the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.
No additional information is available at this time, State Police said.
