O’FALLON — The Looking Glass Prairie Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution donated 337 gently used junior high-level books to the Metro East Literacy Project as part of service efforts marking the organization’s founding and supporting its education mission.
The donation included 12 titles for the O’Fallon-based nonprofit, which promotes literacy throughout the Illinois Metro East area. The project provides children and adults with access to books, libraries, reading instruction and educational opportunities.
The chapter’s donation supported the DAR’s commitment to education and community service by encouraging lifelong reading and expanding access to books. The organization’s mission also includes historic preservation and patriotism.
DAR chapters worldwide participate in an annual day of service on Oct. 11, the anniversary of the organization’s founding in 1890. This year, President General Ginnie Sebastian Savage introduced DAR Month of Service to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks and continue the celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday.
In addition to donating books, Looking Glass Prairie Chapter members prepared bags of treats that were delivered to police and fire departments in O’Fallon, Shiloh, Collinsville and Lebanon.
The DAR is a nonprofit, nonpolitical volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and supporting education.
