CHICAGO – Fenwick’s recent 38-28 victory over East St. Louis in the IHSA Class 6A football finals featured key contributions from Travis Williams, a former East Alton-Wood River and University of Illinois standout, and his son, Aiden Williams, a defensive back for Fenwick.
Williams was an assistant coach for the team.
The win marked a significant achievement against a team widely regarded as a national powerhouse.
East St. Louis is known for its star-studded roster that includes players with multiple college offers and has a reputation as one of the top teams in the country, Travis said. He acknowledged the challenge, saying, “They are obviously always one of the best teams in the country.” He added that after reviewing game film, he believed Fenwick had the potential to win by playing four quarters and offering “a little adversity” to their Flyers’ opponents. For most of the season, East St. Louis had rolled over opponents, Travis said.
The path to the championship required Fenwick to endure weeks of “grit and adversity,” according to Travis, contrasting it with East St. Louis’s typical dominance in previous games. He expressed pride in his son’s role and overall accomplishments.
Aiden Williams demonstrated resilience and determination throughout the summer and season. Travis said, “I am very proud of [Aiden] and everything he has accomplished. I have watched him grow up and return to track last year, fight through the whole summer, knowing summer and fall recruiting for him was crucial.”
Aiden performed at a high level throughout the 2025 football season, finishing second on the team in tackles and earning all-conference honors. He should now be a top candidate for college teams as they continue their recruiting processes, Travis said.
“Aiden is very capable of playing at a high level in college,” Travis said. “I told him before the East St. Louis game, all eyes are on Fenwick and the other Chicago schools, and this is an excellent opportunity for him and the others to get looks from colleges.”
Reflecting on the Fenwick championship experience, Travis described it as “kind of surreal” and “very fitting as a Cinderella story.”
Travis shared his personal connections to East St. Louis through former teammates and coaches, emphasizing the mutual respect he has for them despite the loss.
In addition to football, Aiden has excelled in track and field. Last year, he qualified for the 300 and 110 hurdles, setting school records and earning all-state honors. He was also an active relay participant.
Travis highlighted Aiden’s progress, saying, “Now he is coming out of a football season where he is healthy, and he has gotten faster. He has a great opportunity to shoot for another state championship in either the 110-meter high hurdles or the 300-meter low hurdles in track and field.”
Fenwick’s triumph over East St. Louis stands as a testament to perseverance and teamwork, with the Williams family playing a central role in the team’s historic run.
