GRANITE CITY – A Granite City man with “a lengthy history” of domestic violence has been charged and detained in his sixth domestic battery case since 1995.
Michael E. Bridges, 62, of Granite City, faces one count each of aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery (both Class 2 felonies), and a Class 3 felony count of aggravated battery.
The charges against Bridges were filed in Madison County court on July 27, 2026 and stem from an alleged incident two days prior on July 25.
Bridges reportedly committed an act of domestic battery against another individual after previously being convicted of domestic battery on five prior occasions. Each of his previous domestic battery convictions were from Madison County cases spanning 1995 to 2023.
In this latest case, the victim reported being attacked by Bridges before escaping and calling for police assistance, according to the state’s petition to deny Bridges’s pretrial release from custody. As the victim was fleeing from Bridges, he allegedly “continued to pursue her, armed with [a] knife, indicating he intended to kill her.”
The petition notes Bridges “has a lengthy history of domestic battery,” including one prior conviction of domestic battery involving the same victim from this case. At the time of this latest offense, Bridges was also on probation from a 2025 case in which he was convicted of driving on a revoked/suspended license and possession of methamphetamine.
The Granite City Police Department presented the latest case against Bridges, who currently remains in custody at the Madison County Jail.
All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
