The chapter hosted a groundbreaking Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026, to launch the project, which will provide housing for a partner family selected by its board after a stringent application process. Board members, local leaders, and volunteers attended to support the build.
The Edwardsville Township board donated the property in December 2025. The chapter also expressed appreciation for its collaboration with the city of Edwardsville as it prepared to begin construction.
“We are excited to get this build under way and look forward to another successful project which could not be completed without the help of local businesses and volunteers,” said Drew Westerhold, vice president of the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Habitat for Humanity chapter.
“The family chosen for this build has been wonderful to work with so far. We look forward to their continued partnership throughout this build and hope to see the lasting benefit that this home will provide to them within our community.”
The Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit founded by Millard and Linda Fuller in 1976. Its mission is to provide decent, affordable housing to families in need, to eliminate poverty and substandard housing. The organization serves 120 countries and all 50 states through more than 1,200 affiliates.
The Lewis & Clark affiliate, established in 1990, has placed more than 70 families in homes. It serves communities in southern Illinois, including Edwardsville, Glen Carbon, Alton, Collinsville, O’Fallon and Bond County.
Habitat homeowners participate in building their homes. Once construction is complete, they make monthly mortgage payments at zero interest to Lewis & Clark Habitat. Those payments help fund homes for other selected families.
