Lawrence Campbell

Lawrence Campbell, age 99, of O’Fallon, Ill., was born December 23, 1925 in Oakdale, Ill. He passed away at HSHS St. Joseph Hospital, in Breese, Ill., on Tuesday afternoon, August 19, 2025.

Lawrence was born to William and Bertha, nee Magerkurth, Campbell, and grew up on a farm as one of eight children. Throughout life, he wore several career hats, including schoolteacher; Coca-Cola delivery driver; the Department Foreman at Enterprise Foundry; a representative for Met Life Insurance Co.; and a Coal Miner for Peabody Coal.

Mr. Campbell served as Mayor of Tilden, Illinois from 1961-1976, and contributed his efforts to the Randolph Co. Planning Commission, Tilden and Sparta schools’ Boards of Education, and was instrumental in leading the development of the village. Mr. Campbell was a co-founder of the establishment of the Kaskaskia Water District.

He dedicated many years as a public servant, including as a member of Randolph Co. School Trustee, charter member of Randolph Co. Police Association, Director of Kaskaskia Industrial Development Corp., an EMT, Tilden volunteer Fire Dept. and Egyptian Firefighters Assoc., Lions Club, and Randoph Co. Life Underwriters Assoc.

He moved to O’Fallon in the mid-70s. After formal retirement, he was self-employed as a handyman. He attended Spring Valley Baptist Church, Shiloh.

He was preceded in death by his wife Gwendolyn, nee Ervin, Campbell in 2018; his sons Glen Campbell and Gary Campbell; his parents; his former wife Bertha, nee Bumann, Campbell; his siblings Floyd, William Roy, Wilfred, Nellie, Harold, Lester, and twin sister Florence Vuichard.

Surviving are his son Roger L. Campbell of O’Fallon, Ill., step-son Jeffrey Schumacher of Springfield, Ill.; nine grandchildren; several great and great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held 10 am – Noon, Monday, August 25, 2025 at Wolfersberger Funeral Home, 102 W. Washington St., O’Fallon, Ill., followed by a service to begin at Noon, with Pastor Paul Hahn officiating. Burial will follow at O’Fallon City Cemetery, O’Fallon, Ill.
