Illinois Secretary of State Releases 2025 List of Rejected Vanity License Plates

SPRINGFIELD — The office of Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has released its annual list of rejected vanity and personalized license plate requests for 2025, showing that while Illinois drivers remain creative, some ideas still cross the line.

According to the Illinois Secretary of State, the office received 55,690 requests for vanity and personalized plates this year. More than 550 submissions were denied after being deemed inflammatory, profane, offensive, or too difficult to read. All are grounds for rejection under Illinois law.

The rejected plates ranged from crude to simply outlandish. Notable examples from this year’s list include BBL, BDASMOM, BLUBALN, BRICKED, IBPOOPN, ICUP, PRIUSSY, SNDNUDZ, SYBAU, and TYPESHT.

Giannoulias’ office said many rejected submissions rely on slang, abbreviations, or coded language that can carry inappropriate meanings or be easily misinterpreted. While creativity is encouraged, officials stressed that license plates must remain readable and meet standards of decency.

Each year, the rejected plate list draws public attention and serves as a reminder of the rules surrounding vanity and personalized plates in Illinois.

Drivers interested in applying for a customized plate can review guidelines and submit requests through the Secretary of State’s “Pick a Plate” system at ilsos.gov.
