FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS – Fairview Heights Police Chief Steve Johnson on Monday released a message from a citizen praising an officer’s response to a reported wallet theft at a local Lowe’s store.
In the release dated Monday, May 11, 2026, Johnson shared an email in which the citizen said they were “the victim of a wallet theft at our local Lowe’s” and the writer credited Fairview Heights Police Officer Jacob Montagnani with quickly locating a suspect and recovering money.
According to the email, Lowe’s staff reviewed surveillance footage “within minutes of discovering the loss” and “confirmed that the woman standing behind me at the register had taken it.”
The citizen wrote that when Officer Montagnani arrived, “he immediately took command of the situation,” reviewed the scene and video, and assessed the evidence. The email said the officer assured the citizen, “the suspect would be apprehended swiftly.”
“Just two hours after our initial interaction, Officer Montagnani contacted me to report that he had not only located and detained the suspect but had also recovered my money,” the citizen wrote.
The message said Montagnani’s actions were “exemplary.” It said he “embodies the highest standards of the Fairview Heights Police Department,” adding, “Thank you for fostering a department where this level of service is not the exception, but the expectation.”
