EDWARDSVILLE – A domestic battery convict accused of an unprovoked vehicular invasion and attack on two people in the Edwardsville Dairy Queen parking lot faces his latest felony charges in Madison County.
Curtis Johnson Jr., 34, of Collinsville, was charged on June 2, 2026 with a Class 1 felony count of vehicular invasion, two Class 3 felony counts of aggravated battery, and a Class 4 felony count of domestic battery, his second or subsequent offense.
Johnson allegedly knowingly entered an occupied motor vehicle by force and struck the vehicle’s two occupants without legal justification on April 24, 2026. Charging documents state the incident took place in the Dairy Queen parking lot at 400 S. Buchanan St. in Edwardsville.
According to the state’s petition to deny Johnson’s pretrial release from custody, Johnson opened the vehicle’s front driver-side door “without provocation or consent” from either of the occupants. After Johnson struck the first victim, the other vehicle occupant reportedly tried to intervene and was also struck by Johnson.
After the physical altercation, Johnson allegedly took the vehicle’s keys out of the ignition and threw them before fleeing toward the Madison County Transit (MCT) Park and Ride bus stop, where he was found by officers approximately one hour later.
The petition states Johnson then continued fleeing and hiding from officers before eventually being located and asked to identify himself. He reportedly initially told officers his name was “Josh.”
Johnson had previously been convicted of domestic battery involving a different victim in a prior Madison County case from 2016. Johnson initially plead guilty to a Class 2 felony count of domestic battery, but the petition states his conviction was later amended to a Class A Misdemeanor.
The Edwardsville Police Department presented the latest case against Johnson, who currently remains in custody at the Madison County Jail.
All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
