Maxim Equalizes Late In Regulation, but New Trier Wins Over Edwardsville 2-1 After Extra Time In 3A Girls Soccer Semifinals

NAPERVILLE – Anna Maxim scored the equalizer late in regulation time, but Winnetka New Trier scored in the 86th minute and held on to defeat Edwardsville 2-1 after extra time in the IHSA Class 3A girls soccer state semifinals Friday evening, June 5, 2026, at North Central College in Naperville, in far western suburban Chicago.

The win advances the Trevians to the state final Saturday evening against either Naperville Central or Gurnee Warren, while the Tigers will play in the third place match against the Central-Warren loser Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m.

New Trier scored first in the 12th minute on a goal by Dami Balogun to put the Trevians into the lead 1-0. It stayed that way throughout the remainder of the half, but in the 56th minute, Gracie Rickard-Bugel of New Trier was booked after a hard foul. It was the only time the yellow card was shown in the match.

Maxim drew the Tigers level in the 72nd minute when she took a pass from Maggie Cadigan and scored to tie the game 1-1, forcing extra time when the two teams couldn’t score again. New Trier retook the lead in the 86th minute on a goal by Catherine Shean on an assist by Brooke Zabel. The Tigers pressed forward throughout the rest of extra time, but couldn’t find the back of the net, allowing the Trevians to come away with the win and take a spot in the state final.

The Trevians are now 26-1-1, while the Tigers go to 16-4-2. and will play the Naperville Central-Gurnee Warren loser in the third-place game Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. New Trier meets the Central-Warren winner in the state final Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
