Anthony Besserman

Anthony “Tony” Besserman, 91, of Madison, Illinois, passed away on August 7, 2026. He was born on February 26, 1935, to Joseph and Mollie Besserman.

Tony retired from Granite City Steel after many years of service. He was a man of strong Catholic faith and was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Madison and Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City.

In his younger years, Tony enjoyed hunting and welcoming friends to his farm. He also treasured time spent at his fishing cabin on the Illinois River, where many good times and memories were shared. Tony enjoyed trips to Las Vegas and, closer to home, his weekly trips to the Alton Belle. He was also a familiar face at Park Grille, where he enjoyed good food, conversation, and the company of friends.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mollie Besserman; his sister, JoAnn Murphy; and his dear friend, Ailene Kelly.

He is survived by his brother, Jerry (Tina) Besserman; his niece, Deborah Besserman and her husband, Rich Miller; his nephew, Joseph (Andrea) Besserman; his niece, Kelly Murphy; his great-niece, Abigayle Noud; his great-nephews, Austen and Zachary Zimmer; his dear friends, Allen and Laura Harris and family; and many extended family members and friends.

Tony will be remembered for the life he lived, the friendships he treasured, and the many memories he created with those who knew and loved him.

Services will be held Monday, August 17, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Madison, Illinois, with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m., followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church.
