Sina “Pooch” Ghatan, 80, of Belleville, IL was born in Iran to Asraf and Hadayat, and spent his early years surrounded by the warmth of his siblings— Mina, Bina, and Danny—and extended family.
A devoted scholar with a remarkable memory, Pooch’s passion for learning earned him acceptance into a highly selective medical program in Iran. Driven by a desire to expand his horizons and learn from the best, he made the courageous decision to immigrate to the United States.
While working in cancer research, Pooch discovered that his compassion led him down a different path. Choosing to dedicate his career to chemistry, he focused on developing fire-retardant products and took pride in the knowledge that his work contributed to saving lives.
Pooch’s kindness and genuine interest in others allowed him to form meaningful friendships wherever he went—from doctors’ offices and the courthouse to thrift stores and grocery aisles. He was known for his playful sense of humor and infectious belly laugh that would light up any room.
Generosity was second nature to Pooch, who delighted in sharing gifts with those around him. Even as he faced chronic health challenges, he found joy in sending care packages to loved ones across the country, eager to spread happiness in people’s lives.
Pooch is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Nina (Scotty) and Julie; his brothers, Bina (Fariba) and Danny (Maureen); his extended family; and his beloved granddaughter, Maisel, who was his “sanam” and light of his life.
In honor of Pooch’s spirit, his family invites all who knew him to carry forward his legacy by performing simple acts of kindness—ensuring that his light continues to brighten the lives of others.
