GODFREY – Madison County Sheriff’s Deputies are investigating a residential arson and domestic incident that unfolded Sunday afternoon near Godfrey Road and Enos Lane.
At approximately 4:50 p.m., deputies were dispatched to a report of a single-vehicle crash in the area of Godfrey Road and Enos Lane. Upon arrival, they found the vehicle unoccupied with several shattered windows and deployed airbags. Around the same time, authorities received a report of a domestic battery at a nearby residence.
According to preliminary information, a verbal dispute occurred between a male and female at the residence. The male then left in the vehicle involved in the crash, which occurred at the intersection of Godfrey Road and Enos Lane. After the crash, the sheriff’s office said the male returned to the residence where the female was battered. She later fled to a neighbor’s house to seek help.
Shortly after the female left, the residence caught fire. The Godfrey Fire Department responded and extinguished the flames, which were contained to the living room area. Officials noted minimal fire damage but heavy smoke damage throughout the home.
Evidence at the scene suggests the fire was intentionally set. The male suspect was apprehended by deputies and is currently being held at the Madison County Jail.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois State Fire Marshal are continuing their investigation into the source of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
This information remains preliminary as the investigation is ongoing.
