Champaign – Several area wrestlers are still alive after day two of the IHSA State Wrestling Tournament.
In class 1A 120-pound match Leyton Cobine (Roxana) came out in his first match on Friday and was able to get a pin on Shawn Schlickman (GCMS) to stay alive but in his second match of the day he was eliminated by Aaron Meenen(RockFall) by a score of 14-3.
At 126-pound weight class in class 1A Brandon Green Jr. had a great day and went 2-0 for the day to stay alive and will wrestle Saturday wrestleback quarterfinals. Greens first match of the day he was able to get a pin at the 2:33 mark over Micah Spinazzola (Peotone) and in his second match he had another pin over Omar Samayoa at 2:20.
Logan Riggs (Roxana) was eliminated today after a tech-fall (20-5) to Sam Begler.
Roxana’s Braden Johnson stayed alive in the 152-pound bracket after he went 2-0 on Friday. In his first match of the day, he pinned Max Kelly (Kewanee) at 1:48 in the match. In his second match he pinned Bryson Capansky (Oakwood) at 5:01.
James Herring of Roxana was eliminated in the 220-weight class after he was pinned by Craig Markello of Robinson.
EAWR Drake Champlin 220-pound weight class stayed alive after he got a close 10-8 decision over Mike Haas. Champlin will face Owen O’Hara on Saturday.
Class 2A
CM’s Caleb Scott survived and will wrestle Saturday after he was able to get a 4-3 decision over Austin Johnston (Normal West). Scott will wrestle Korbin Bateman (Mattoon).
Jersey’s Jaydon Busch also was able to move onto Saturday after he went 2-0 for the day. He was able to get his first win over Devontae Givens with a pin. Busch then came back and got another pin after he pinned Robert Hull at 1:42. Busch will now face Lincoln Cooley on Saturday.
CM Bradley Ruckman, Bryce Griffin, and Abe Wojcikiewicz will wrestle tonight in hopes to advance to the championship round. We will have a story later tonight after the matches end.
Class 3A
Edwardsville’s Ryan Richie was eliminated in the 113-weight class after he lost to Alejandro Cordova (Round Lake) 9-5 decision. But Edwardsville’s Drew Landau was able to advance to Saturday after we was able to beat rival Yaveion Freeman of Alton 4-2. Landau will face Scott Busse.
