BOYS BASKETBALL
IHSA PLAYOFFS — REGIONAL SEMIFINALS
CLASS 1A
In the semifinals of the Sparta regional, Woodlawn defeated Waterloo Gibault Catholic 68-27, and the host Bulldogs won over Okawville 63-38. The Cardinals are now 29-3, and Sparta goes to 29-4, and meet in the final Friday night at 7 p.m. The Hawks end their season 11-19. and the Rockets finish up at 16-16.
In the Carrollton regional, Calhoun won over Greenfield Northwestern 68-49, and Pawnee defeated the host Hawks 55-49. The Warriors are now 25-5, while the Indians go to 19-13, and play in the final Friday night at 7 p.n. The Tigers finish the season at 15-16, while Carrollton ends up at 16-15.
CLASS 2A
BREESE CENTRAL 36, BELLEVILLE ALTHOFF CATHOLIC 33: In the semifinals at Columbia, Central knocked out last year’s Class 2A runners-up Althoff out of the tournament with a close win.
Steven Brown led the Crusaders with 10 points, while Michael Franklin, Jr. came up with six points.
The Cougars are now 22-9, while Althoff finishes its season at 15-17.
In the semifinals at Elkville Elverado, New Athens defeated Steeleville 57-48. The Yellow Jackets are now 24-6, and go to the final against Waltonville, who defeated Christopher 57-35, in Friday’s final at 7 p.m. The Spartans are now 28-4, while the Warriors finish their season at 22-9 and the Bearcats finish up at 17-13.
BREESE MATER DEI CATHOLIC 68, COLUMBIA 65 (OT): In the second semifinal at Columbia, Mater Dei led at the half 27-22, but Columbia came back to tie the game 56-56 at the end of regulation and force overtime. The Knights outscored the Eagles in overtime 12-9 to win and advance.
Eddie Smajic, among the area’s leading scorers this season, wound up with 32 points for Columbia, while Brody Landgraf had 17 points, and Elliott Nelson hit for 10 points.
Mater Dei goes to Friday night’s final against Central at 18-14, while the Eagles finish their season at 22-10. The final tips off at 7 p.m.
CLASS 4A
In the semifinals at the O’Fallon regional at the OTHS Panther Dome, Belleville East upset second seed Belleville West 40-35, and Alton topped the host Panthers 64-46. The Lancers are now 10-19, while the Redbirds go to 20-11, and will meet in the final Friday night at 7 p.m. The Maroons were eliminated at 21-10, and O’Fallon ends its season 8-22.
In the Edwardsville regional at Lucco-Jackson Gym, the host Tigers held off Quincy 42-38, and Collinsville did the same to Granite City 42-39. Edwardsville is now 22-7, while the Kahoks go to 14-16 with the two teams meeting on Friday in the final at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils finish the season 8-21, while the Warriors end up at 16-15.
JERSEY ATHLETICS
WEDNESDAY NIGHT
JCMS (7/8) Volleyball traveled to St. Francis and came away with wins at both levels. The 7th grade battled through three sets to earn the victory, 25–17, 16–25, 25–22. The 8th grade won in two straight sets, 25-8 and 25-18.
TUESDAY NIGHT
JCMS (7/8) Volleyball traveled to Alton. The 7th grade won in a thrilling 3-set game, after losing set one, 21-25 they came back strong to win, 25-10 and 25-20. After a 14-25 set one loss, the 8th-grade Panthers battled back with the help of 7 serves from Stella Egelhoff in set two, but fell short in a 23-25 loss.
